Haters come hate.

AutoTrader Classics - 1981 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Gray Other Automatic | Import Classics | Grand Rapids, MI

$29k for that? Not even 9k! Can you atleast get the emblem straight? Shampoo the rear carpet?

Yeah, that's nuts. At first I thought it was the same wagon posted maybe 6 months ago that was going for $30,000 but that one had something like 35,000 documented miles and was pristine; basically show-room condition. If it was detailed better, and came with maintenance records, I'd say it's a $7,500 wagon if the seller was willing to wait for the right buyer.

It is a nice one, just not a $29K nice one. For some reason I've seen that cars on AutoTrader often list for as much as 3 times the price of Craigslist. Maybe AutoTrader buyers are suckers...

ROTFLMAO

All that place needs now is a Mercedes dealer sign out front to qualify for Platinum Club Stealership status.

I think it might be the same seller. These pictures look familiar.

Steep price indeed, no one on this forum would pay even close to that I suppose. But buyers with this kind of money exist. Perhaps someone who grew up in the 3rd row of one of these, or as a car for a weekend house.

It's kind of like the "restored" Jeep Grand Wagoneers that go for ~$50,000.

$50,000 dollars is steep for a 6,000 lb SUV without fuel injection built in 1991.

But if it's parked in the driveway of a 6 Million dollar beach house in Nantucket, it's the right price for the owner. To him/her it costs the same as a fully decked out suburban, but has that extra "cool" factor at the country club.

I am all for out of this world and outlandishly priced TDs. I am also 100% behind any WVO/Veggie Oil conversion someone wants to install.

The inflated prices of "collector quality" TDs will only raise the price of whats in my garage, and the more WVO conversions will thin the herd to collectors willing to pay this much down the road for a well cared for, but not showroom quality wagon.

This is the same guy on Autotrader that was selling a 300CD just like mine, 1985 baby on navy blue except his had just under 200K miles on it and was trying to get $26K for it. It had been detailed just like this one. "G R Auto Gallery" really makes me laugh with their vaulations, they're f**kin morons.

I agree 100% wagonfreak. Well, I would, if it were collector's quality. It's not. It's a nice driver, at best. See here for more pictures:

1981 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Turbo Diesel | GR Auto Gallery
  • It has an aftermarket radio.
  • The dash has cracks.
  • It is missing some pieces of the windshield trim.
  • You can tell there is rust behind the door seals at the bottom edge.
  • The front seat back is pretty worn out.
  • The second row seat appears to be missing the seat belt receivers. Or at the very least the elastic that is supposed to keep them above the folding seat bottoms is ripped out.
  • The front map pockets are scuffed, faded, etc.
  • The wood on the glove box door is lifting.
  • The carpet that is supposed to cover the third row folding seat is missing.
  • The spare tire cover is pretty trashed. I've seen better ones in junkyard TD's.
  • There's corrosion and rust in the engine compartment.
  • Rust behind the emblems on the tailgate.
  • Fog lights are faded.
  • All the inner door trim around the windows is shrunk.
  • The nets on the back of the driver's seats are limp.
  • The rear seat is torn.
  • The wood trim is cracked pretty bad.
  • Third row seat is also missing the seat belt receivers.
  • Holes drilled in the rear first aid kit cover for the aftermarket amp.
  • R134A conversion?
  • Looks like at least one rust hole in the floor pan.
  • Oil leak(s).
  • Rust pimples showing up on the front fenders.

That is not a collector's car. It's still a great looking car I'd be proud to drive, but I'd park it on the street and pick up bales of hay in it too. It's far far away from a garage queen.

The keyword there is SELL. You can put a car up on the internet at whatever price grabs you, doesn't mean you can sell it. OTOH, all it takes is one Benz noob to arrive and think he's Donald Trump when he "low-low-balls" the guy with a $15k offer and the guy takes it.

And here is me sweating over getting my 300td ready to sell, wondering if I can ask north of $5k for it (Texas car with factory exhaust still in place, but lots of rust pimples and generally sad cosmetics).

I recall some guy trying to sell maybe a silver one as John Lenons for 35,000 maybe 10 years ago on ebay. Not sure if he ever sold it. Not sure if it would be worth more.

I've seen this car in person. Its a sight to behold. Its absolutely mint.... However, the price is insane. Its here in Grand Rapids at the GR auto gallery.

They also had/have a completely mint 1982 300SD....and a 1980 300CD.....and a 1978 450SL.....all completely perfect in every way.

I'm not sure this is the same car you saw? It's definitely not perfect in every way from the pictures alone. A nice car, absolutely, but mint? With rust, ripped seats, oil leaks, cracked wood, etc?
