has anyone succeeded in repairing old-style driver's vacuum lock cylinder?

this tiny part for early chasses (1168000473) is twice as expensive as the later-style one. before i buy a replacement, has anyone taken one apart?

I didn't write this guide personally, just posted it on behalf of someone over on benzworld who did this. He reports it is working well a year later.

Hmm
So, no parts are required to rebuild it... I'd try spraying brake cleaner in it, and moving it around a lot then dribble some silicone spray in there to lube it up...

Seemingly, yes, nothing more than new o-ring/seals.

If you look closely at the pics in the link you provided, it appears to be not a simple o-ring, but a seal with a lip. I have not taken one apart so I am not 100% certain. But from my recent work on installing keyless entry and observing how the master vacuum switch behaves to vacuum, leads me to believe it is not an o-ring.

I think I'm combining two sets of information on this. The person who wrote this guide re-installed the old seals after cleaning and found it to be sufficient. Someone else replaced the seals with o-rings, and found them to work adequately. They are over on benzworld as well. They bought a bunch of o-rings that they said were just the right size, and then offered to mail them for free to anyone who asked, since they had lots of extras. A nice gesture...

Anyway I have two of these o-rings in hand now thanks to him. I guess I'll try them sometime, if the need arises. I only learned about the possibility to refresh the old one AFTER already buying my new one for my '79. My '85 uses the new, cheaper style.

Just cut one of mine open that was leaking, they aren't just o-rings but seals as was said, I am not sure if an o-ring could do the job, but it is worth a try.

each of the seals has a kind of step in it so that they fit over the transitional edge between two shaft diameters, and then a soft flange at the end. hard to replicate this with o-rings. it seems like the most prudent thing might be to use several in two sizes - both smaller than what i had on hand. hmmm....
