Need new O ring for oil cap 81 300SD

Guys - cannot find a fairly recent post which said the rubber O ring on the oil cap could be replaced; actually said it was the same O ring that is on the gas cap. Can someone find that post for me or give me the part number.

Thx.

Oil and fuel cap seals are not the same part. And neither are o-rings.

Compress - thanks for that; I have the original metal cap. Wonder if this will work?

Tango - they are the same on the 81 300SD. I know because I recently switched my gas cap for my oil cap. Same.

Getting oil on the valve cover. Assume the rubber gasket needs replacing.

There was more info in that missing post though. Anyone find the old post?

In a pinch I have made gaskets like this from old inner tubes. Sometimes it works just fine and other times it can get you by until you can get the correct thickness by ordering the part.

The correct parts are not the same. Just because something happens to fit doesn't make it correct.
It appears that "The Source" has the gaskets for the metal oil filler cap.

For comparison, here is the fuel cap gasket:

Now you tell me after I grabbed a nice fresh gasket off a gas cap at the junk yard and put it in my oil cap. Seals very nicely too. I'd put the old one back in but it came out in three pieces. Guess I'll just stick with what works.

Mercedes does not currently sell a dedicated gasket for the old style metal oil caps. So there is not "correct" part, beyond what fits.

Unless you want to replace it with a plastic cap. Go for it...it's certainly your choice.

The new Genuine Mercedes blue fuel filler cap gaskets are very nice, thick, pliable and seal very well in both applications. The oil and fuel filter metal caps are basically identical anyway, minus the "OEL" marker on the oil cap.

I have used the blue seal for the fuel cap for the Oel cap. seems to fit a bit tighter. I grab a few when Iam in the yards.

The metal fuel cap will fit on the VC, but will sit on a cocked angle compared to the metal Oel Cap which sit in line with the VC.

The plastic Oel cap I have used in the past, always seeped some oil.

The plastic oil cap gasket will NOT fit or work in the metal cap. The fuel cap gasket WILL work. And it's available from this site.
Search in parts lookup for fuel cap gasket.

Not so. The fuel cap features an internal pressure relief valve.

Hmmn, I didn't know that. I thought the tank vacuum/ pressure relief valve under the car takes care of that.

I have never seen a blue seal for an oil or fuel cap, they were all black. When did Mercedes change the color?
