OM616/OM617 Piston Group Buy.

I'm having some 240D pistons made, and I'd like to get some other guys together for a group buy. These would be full piston kits with rings, wrist pins, and clips. I think if we get ten guys together for a group buy, we can get the kits for ~$85 a hole, including freight. These pistons will also work for NA 5 cylinder. I'll looking into different wrist pins and having the wrist pin journals enlarged for turbo engines. I believe the pistons are the same, besides those two things.

I'm currently looking at a time frame of 2-3 months after the group buy is finalized to have the pistons in my possession to ship out. I would need half the money up front, real names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. I would give all participants the same information for myself.

I will be doing full rebuilds on 5 OM616's this year, hence why I'd like to do a piston group buy with some other guys and get a better price. I'm also hoping to get gaskets, bearings, etc at group buy prices if anyone would be interested in that as well.

Whoever is interested, post in the thread. Feel free to ask any questions. I will be running this over at Benzworld as well.

Thanks

RR

No good for turbos as the material will be wrong & the blanks they use wont have the necessary oil ways.

There was a seller on eBay that sold the naturally aspirated (non-turbo) Diesel Pistons that were made in Taiwan.

"These pistons are made by Right Way Industrial. They are an OEM for Ford and Isuzu. Ford and Isuzu make many diesel engines for the European market, but not for the US market."
They are about $73 each plus shipping sold in sets of 4 or you can add the 5 Piston.

However, the Seller Prothe/Hans Import Parts is know for poor Customer Service when there is a problem with the Parts or the actual order getting to you. I have bought small items from Him over the Years with no issues.

Who will be making these pistons? What's the benefit of these over any other piston?

I dealt with this guy when I rebuilt the last OM616 I did. I was very unhappy. He's in Indian Trail NC, like 2 hours from me. I had to order the pistons 3 times. I'd order the pistons, wait a week, call them. "We have no record of your purchase." That happened twice. The third time I got them and a $30 freight bill that I wasn't informed of. Very unhappy. The engine was 1 week late to the customer because this place does not have their **** together. Very unhappy.

Also, the pistons are not Right Way Indust, but are fine quality. In the end, the engine runs like a top.

The pistons are Asian sourced. I believe the benefit is the price.

This was over 5 Years ago I ask where the Pistons and was told they were Made Taiwan so that is certainly Asia.

I think if you deal with Him throuh eBay it offers more protection for the Customer they if you just order from Home at his normal website.

It sounds like He does not stock the items bet gets them from another Party.

If the stock Pistons have any sort of Steel or other Alloy Insert in the Piston Head I don't see any custom Piston Maker making the Pistons at a resonable cost.

I was looking at an normal internet seller and they had the Kobenschmidt (spelling?) Pistons for $115 each; the ones with the sort of Star Fish shaped Piston Crown on one side.
That is not a huge burden price wise.

Car Parts Discount has the German made Kolbenschmidt for $98.55 each. I just finished the rebuild on my 240D which has 4 new pistons.

They even have the oversized pistons in case you just want to rebore the cylinders an install oversize.

Well, hey, what the heck. Everybody has their own ideas on good deals and how to save money. I would say off hand this is not a good way to save money. Now since you are rebuilding 240D's and even a few 300D's NA every year, what did you say about six rebuilds a year, well then why don't you buy the 10 sets of the "way less then original equipment" specs for almost the same dollars. These things are precision cast and then highly machined. The formula of the casting material involved tons of lab testing. Man, diesel pistons take a beating. I myself wouldn't take your "locally manufactured pistons" and use them if they were free if I could buy a set from a known and reputable parts supplier for about $400.00 a set. And then have to send in say 50% of the cost and wait months before I get the product. Just not a good way to do business. no it is less then that, just plain ignorant.

Rather than risk inadequate material and production quality, one money ahead with a greater chance of success, by having a competent machinist dry sleeve the block and fit
The cylinders to the original pistons. I have done this before with great success. This obviously only works if the original pistons pass inspection but they almost always do.
