Sunroof fix...easy

My sunroof opens but would not close. I had to manually close it via the emergency instructions in the manual which is turning a bolt in the trunk.
At first I thought it might be my motor, or gears in the motor or cable etc.
I researched the opening not closing issue and and the fix I got was to replace the switch. I decided to clean it first because the new switch was 55 dollars.

I removed the switch and used a fast drying electrical contact cleaner on the posts and shot it into the switch and moved the switch back and forth until it became smooth as silk. I did this several times, until all of the brown gunk was not collecting on my white rag anymore. Not sure if it was old grease, or nicotine over the years, but it seemed to clean everything out that cant be seen inside the switch.

I used a bit of dielectric grease on each post when plugging it back in, and amazingly it WORKS!!!

I know that it is the switch that was causing the problem, and it may need replacing eventually, but for now I am enjoying the success of an easy fix to my sunroof opening and not closing.

I guess that I was lucky and did not have issues with the motor, gears, or cable. I am going to leave all of that alone for now as it is working smoothly with no noises or other issues.

Similar in my 85 300D. Both the sun-roof and 2 windows (driver front & pass. rear) stopped working. I also sprayed contact cleaner in the switches, but found main problem was the 12 V supply was dropping when actuated. Removed the fuses, sanded, re-installed w/ di-electric grease. Worked fine then.
