My chest is bruised from having a 75lb tranny sit on it.
Hah couldn't resist.
With the car on jackstands I've never found a tranny jack that does the job. The good book mentions specific cradles but I assume that all of the FSM details involve a lift. What's the best method for getting trans back into car?

I used the harbor freight tranny jack to lower and raise the tranny into my 190d without a problem, it worked great! Car was about 30" off the floor on stands.

I used a hydraulic floor jack with a wide nylon strap over the top of the transmission to secure it to the jack.

you cannot lose with that thing. I was doing the whole chest install or pelvic thrust tranny install, and that harbor freight scissor jack is worth every cent and just a relaxing breeze to use. Ive been using it to install GM transmissions which are at least twice the size of the MB. x3 on this contraption!

In the past, when I've done cars, I laid under the car lengthwise and pulled the transmission up between my legs, onto my chest and literally bench pressed it up and into the engine.
This wasn't an option when I replaced the clutch on the truck because the tranny/transfer case is like 400 pounds. I bought a transmission adapter for my floor jack that worked really well. The only problem is that you have to get the vehicle WAY up in the air to get the transmission under it on the jack but then, it's too high up and the jack can't get it up enough to reach the engine.

My personal preference is to pull the engine and transmission out together. It's a little more work, but most things are done from the top and the car isn't way up in the air. Joining the engine and tranny out of the car is easier too.
Just my preference. I might have a different view if I had a lift but I don't.

I just replaced the tranny in my 300D. Did it myself, only using a standard-issue floor jack (a 3-ton low-profile from HF). I had front of the car on ramps and the rear on jackstands. I positioned the jack coming in from the passenger side and below where the tranny should sit in the car, and put a piece of 1'x1' plywood on top. Then I crawled under from the front of the car on my stomach and pulled the transmission toward me using the plywood as a sort of ramp and platform for the trans to side and sit on. I had it balanced right under the pan. I then came from the passenger side on my back and used my leg to pump the jack keeping my hands free to maneuver the transmission into place. a little wonky but it worked, and no broken body parts ;-)

Adapter
Looks like you could save $30.00 USD.
You'd mount the Adapter on one of your existing jack heads. http://www.amazon.com/American-Tool-Exchange-Transmission-Adapter/dp/B00080QGYG Amazon

There is no way you are going to be able to use that ratchet strap, there is no room under the tunnel to swing it. I removed the ratchet and just wrap the strap around the trans and tie it to steady it. I used a small piece of 3/4" plywood on top to give the trans a flatter place to sit. As mentioned, the car needs to be high enough for the trans on the jack to have enough room to roll under and not hit anything. I have only used it on the 4 speed manuals. getting a manual out is easy, it is the lifting part my skinny arse has a problem with. Charlie
