Coolant Change Screw up? Running hot and no heat

Yesterday I drained and flushed (with water) the coolant on my 83 300TD. I installed a new thermostat (actually I have had it 5 years) but did not test it prior to installation. Added new coolant and water and ran it for about 20 minutes. Engine temp was 105 to 110C and there was no heat when I turned on the defrost.

I would assume a faulty thermostat would account for the high engine temp but I would think that there would be heat coming in with the defrost on. Are there any other possible explanations? Thanks for your help.

I would test the thermostat out of the car on the stove.

I would make sure all air is out of the system, remove the top radiator hose and poor coolant in it...see if that gets the thermostat to open...

There is an air pocket in the system.

To help expel it, put the car up on ramps or park on a hill nose up.

Loosen and remove the upper radiator hose from the radiator connection. Pour your coolant mixture into the open end of the hose into the engine. Fill the hose until it can't take any more then hook it back up.

Too bad these don't have a bleeder bolt like a lot of Japanese cars have.

Also, be sure that the bleeder line from the water pump to the head is not clogged with debris.

Is it possible to put the thermostat in backwards on that car? I did that on my ponton once. The temp went nearly up to the red line before the thermostat opened. Turned it around and all is well.

Air in the system. I burped mine last time by driving around in some very steep hills and stopping periodically to top up. I got another three quarts of coolant in vice what it took in the driveway.
