300d insert cost?

How much have you guys paid to have new inserts pressed into our motors? Looking to rebuild my 300d motor and I know the inserts are shot.

I am not sure which part you mean are Inserts???

If you are speaking of the Valve Seats or Valve Guides when you change either you need to have the Valve Seats ground.

You would think that any replacement of Parts on the Cyliner Head with the exception of the cost of the Parts wouuld be included in the cost of a "Head Job".

Valve Seats can usually be re-ground if that has not been done before. That means the do not need to be changed.

I fogot to mention that labor rates vary a lot from one Shop to another even in the same City. It is even more so from region to region where in somes States the Labor Rate is lower than in others.

Labor rates also depend on the Equipment the Shop.

I think you would be way ahead in this game by spending your time finding a good used engine.

Easy to take the Liners out as one Member said you can start from the bottom and gently wedge a Sewdriver between the Liner and the Bore from the bottom of the Liner and crack pieces off till you have enough out that you can pull the rest of the Liner out.

Installing the New liners has been done by People but it is a little has to be done quickly and with care. The Liners are press fitted into the Block.

You freeze the Liners to shrink their OD and then you quicly insert them. Best done with a Tool/Plate that fits the top of the liner.
The problem here is that if you start the Liner crooked it is going to get stuck and the same if the Liner gets too hot.

The last part you cannot do yourself. The Liners need to be bored to fit the Pistons. You need a device called a Boring Bar that.

Note that on Truck Engines commenly have removable Liners that can be replace without any Boring.
The exception to that is the Liner Bores in the Block become damaged.

Back in the 1960s a guy I worked with had a Renault Car and said the Cylinder Liners could be replace in it without any Boring.

It is better to buy an Engine in a beat up Car so that you can test drive it and see if the Engine is good.

It has been more than 5 years but some members of the various Mercedes Forums have bought Engines that were out of the Car only to buy Engines that were also worn out.
Sellers consider any Engine that will start a good Engine no matter the smoking or blow-by.

The best bet is always an used engine. Engine sleeves are $35 a piece. I would expect the labor costs would be $200 or less to press them in if you take the lower block to the shop. This is what I am willing to pay if it was me.
