W115 220D Bell-housing Compatibility
Does anyone know if a W115 220D OM615 has the same bell housing pattern as a W123 OM616?
I have a W115 gas motor on the shelf and a W123 4speed sitting on the floor but my garage is 20 minutes away and was curious if anyone knew before I got the forklift out to get the aforementioned parts out for a test fit. Debating making a W123 220D as a winter beater for this winter to keep the rust free cars off the road, and part the car out in the spring. Have an '83 240D with a blown motor and body rust but structurally solid and a '72 220D that runs but has dangerous structural rot.

Well DieselPaul, it is a bit difficult to see just what you are trying to do, but to do an engine swap just to get a piece of junk through another winter is not cost effective even if you are doing all the labor yourself. But hey, you can be the final judge of that. Regarding your initial question, I would say the bell housing is the same. That two piece unit, separate bell housing and transmission, have been around for a long, long time.

I know that the 1 piece bellhousings are interchangeable 'cause I've done that. I took the auto off my OM617 (1985) and installed a manual 4-speed trans w/integral bellhousing along with the clutch assembly and shifter in my S-10. The manual was from an '83 240D. It's unlikely that they changed the back of the block so yes, I'm pretty sure that all of that should interchange. However, I have no clue between Otto-cycle and Diesel equipment.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that in some cases the manual trans pilot bearing is 1mm too big in diameter and there are several ways to deal with that. Dan |

W115 OM615 engine to W123 OM616 4speed gearbox. OM615 is currently installed in a manual transmission W115 220D. That is about as clear as I can make it. I can swap a OM615/6 in a day, the 240D in question is a structurally solid car with a nice interior, my dad wants a beater 123 he can get salty, and I have this OM615 already on hand. Not sure I am going to do it, but its a thought. My comment about the gas 220 motor was, I can get the answer for myself later on tonight if I wanted to, but was curious if anyone just knew.
