87 300d Transmission modulator tip Broke off
Hi. I'm in the middle of changing the transmission modulator in my 87 300d. I got the modulator out and saw there is about 1/2 inch missing off the tip that sticks into the transmission. I may or may not have done this when I took it out. Any help on how to fix this??
It wouldn't drop into the pan would it? Thanks |

It's very common for modulator pins to break when removing the modulator. You should be able to extract the remains of the broken pin with some forceps, needle nose pliers, etc. Then a new pin is in order.

I encoutered the same problem when changing the modulator. IIRC, I used curved artery forceps. (I believe Harbor Freight carries cheap forceps for such things.) Possibly, 90 degree needle nose pliers might get in there.
It isn't tight but the plastic pin must get brittle, from heat and time, and the slightest side movement will snap it off. Was your modulator leaking? If it is vacuum related, it is likely to be the small rubber cap (available here at Pelican Parts). Believe me, if it is at all possible to retain the original settings it will be much easier. It involves setting up a pressure guage and driving at a certain speed to get the adjustment right. Kind of a PIA. What was the issue that caused you to look at replacing the modulator?

Mine had the original one in there with the black cap that was a little cracked. I am just big on replacing everything in cars that may go bad to prevent any problems- especially this one I just got a few months ago- 166k with a #22 head and everything item works perfectly! My moms a nurse and she brought me a few hemostats. Going out in a few to try to get it out. Thanks for he advice. I was just worried I was gonna have to take part of trans apart!
