FYI the store price is $21 and then there is a $5 mail-in rebate (and there is a limit of 2). At least that is how the ad reads here in CA.

Ad here is also for $5 mail-in rebate. Limit is 12, however.

Your post made me think I may have misread it. But we are both right. They will let you buy 12 at $21, but they will only let you redeem 2 rebates. Perfectly logical!

Both my dad and I still have about 16+ gallons apiece on the shelf from the insane price event that autozone had last winter.

I feel like turning this into a contentious oil thread.

Since the Rotella T6 isn't "real" synthetic, I suggest trying the Castrol diesel rated oil. My engine loves it so much that it barely burns any of it away. Seriously, the Castrol burns at a slower rate than the Delo, Delvac or Mobil1 motor oils.

I still have 30 something gallons of Delo synthetic I got for $3.33 a gallon a year or so ago sitting in my basement because I am not sure I want to put it in my 190D which has 320,000 miles and nothing but a small leak from the valve cover gasket, and haven't wanted to put it in our Sprinter as we have been running Mobil 1 in it since we bought it new.

I thought it was a good synthetic oil.
Own a 1988 300sel w126 and have been using Rotella T6...

Is there another oil that would be good for my 300sel?

The T6 is probably fine for your car. My original post was somewhat tongue and cheek. If you type "synthetic oil" into the search bar, you'll find that there are different grades of synthetic oil, and T6 is not the highest. I'm pretty sure that Mobil1 got downgraded recently and that Amsoil is considered the best.

I bought the Castrol diesel oil a while back because it was on sale, and have been pleasantly surprised at how well it has held up.

What method(s) do you use to determine how well oil "holds up?"

Sometimes when reading posts on this forum, you need to filter the remarks for knowledge content - versus opinion - versus throwaway comments.

All Shell Rotella products are recognized as high quality, in both regular and synthetic product lines. I have been on various Mercedes forums since 1995 and have never heard anything bad about them, and they are widely used.

The T6 is an excellent quality oil for your car.

To learn more about oil, I suggest you visit Used Oil Analysis - Bob is the Oil Guy - Bob is the Oil Guy and click on the "motor oil university" link on the right nav menu.

Not a very scientific method I'm afraid, more of an observation. The Castrol doesn't burn off as quickly during highway driving as other oils that I've used in the past. I realize that just because there's oil in the engine, I shouldn't assume that it's doing a great job of protecting my engine parts from wear, but I'll change the oil and filter at 3500 to 4000 mile intervals.

Thanks for the heads up vstech! My dad and I picked up 2 gallons a piece. Even before the rebate that's the same price as Walmart without having to go to f-in Walmart lol

By who? Amsoil? Something about their product literature has always really bothered me... I'm betting you'd be hard pressed to find a significant difference in function between any of the decent synthetics without a full fleet and laboratory analysis, and even then I would be surprised to come up with a result that could be considered "scientifically significant".
