Trouble Starting 87 190D 2.5L Turbo

The battery is charged
When I turn the key, accessories, glow-plugs, etc. come on...

Then when I turn the key to start the engine it goes *click* once, and nothing happens as if the battery is completely dead. The car started fine and ran three times earlier that day.

I'm afraid it's the starter. Does anyone have any other ideas or possibly a parts manual / diagram and instructions for removing the starter?

Give the starter a smack with a hammer.

Are the battery terminals and starter terminals clean?

Do you hear the starter making a click noise at all?

On my 190E there is a wire very near to the brake booster that was dirty and corroded. It was responsible for sending the signal to the starter. I unplugged it and cleaned it and no problem since. Might be causing your problem?

Battery cables. There are 3 cables.
Battery to starter.
Battery to frame.
Frame to transmission housing.
All three must be clean and attached firmly.

Try the simple thing first: get out your cables and attempt a jump start. Batteries are funny things. Sometimes they just go like that.
