Stripped Internal Thread Repair Time-sert, Helicoil, Keensert and E-Z Lok

Just for information purposes. There are likely other internal thread repairs on the Market but this is info on 4 of them.

Each of them has their on strong points and weaknesses and it is up to you to pick what you think is best for your application.

I used Timesert on my front cover where the bolt hole for the engine shock stripped out. It worked great, and was very easy. I just wish they didn't cost so much.

I have used a lot of Helicoils and some of the Keenserts where when I still worked as a Mechanic. I have used only a few Time-serts.

I think as mentioned in one of the internet Articles you need to drill out more of the parent Metal with the Time-serts and also the Keenserts. I like the idea of repairing the threads but not the idea of making a bigger hole then is needed in the Parent Metal.

But, I realize it is just a personal choice.

I've installed many Heli-Coils and have had excellent luck. I have had a couple of them screw out when subsequently removing the bolt but that really is not a big deal - screw in another insert.

It is a good idea to install them with RED Loctite...

The Difference Between Red, Blue, Green and Purple Threadlockers

On all normal size nuts and bolts. I use the red loctite... it only adds about five foot pounds to the removal torque necessary... but instead of giving up its job after half a turn... which a ' lock washer ' does... it resists the loosening of the item all the way....

Me either.... but I only use RED.... for forty years... since owning a Harley Superglide that threw the rear fender nuts off on the side of the road regularly.... till someone introduced me to loctite...
