Driveline whine '85 300d
I posted last winter about a whine (on really cold mornings, more like a howl) from the driveline until the car was warm. I pretty much figured it was the driveshaft center bearing (we couldn't get any sound when the wheels were turning on the hoist, so it was best guess).
Late this summer I started to get it in warm temps... would come and go at slow speeds, but come back steady at about 50 mph steady unless I increased speed. BUT: it didn't seem to be coming from the back of the car. Finally on Saturday I had my wrench do the center bearing and carrier. At first I was happy happy clap hands... seems like low speed whine is gone. Seemed like the center bearing had done the job. Sunday I took it out on the highway. The higher-speed whine is still there. It sounds like a differential whine, 100 percent, but does not seem to be coming from the back seat area. I assume there is a rear output bearing on the transmission. Would it make such a sound, going bad?
