Curious alternator performance 1980 300D
It has only happened twice; both times I was a a poker game and the car was parked on the street out in the rain. And I mean rain. Down here in the tropics during the rainy season we can have 4 to 6 inches of rain in an hour. When I started the car the alternator light was on. It went on and off intermittently for maybe ten minutes, dimming or going off with increased engine RPM's. It has never happened otherwise, not while driving in the rain nor when driving or starting the car when the weather is dry.
There are no water leaks through the firewall (hood hinge wells and under the battery). I fixed all of that. You would expect the problem to occur while driving and water is being driven into the engine compartment, but sitting still on almost level street pavement? Richard |
