Why don't you include your VIN number in the first post...
I think you need to check to see if you have all the original metal braces which go between the metal fuel lines.... they can crack from vibration at some time if all are not there..
you are lucky to have an early model .... that system of hoses on your firewall is wire controlled and pretty much bullet proof.... it is your heater water control....
The round thing with serrated edges below your fuel injection pump is the hand pump for when you need to get the air out of your fuel system...as when you run the car out of fuel and pump air into the lines... you have to crack the fittings at the injector and pump till you only have fuel in the lines... or when you replace your fuel filter... same thing...

It'd help if you could draw a circle around or an arrow to a part you want identified.

Also this:
Mercedes-Benz Model 123 - Disc 2
might help.

That seems like a good site... but none of the instruction pages loaded.... came up error...

Still need VIN.... as some changes occurred according to VIN.... not according to ' year'...

All I can suggest for you is that you replace all of the suspension bushings and shocks if they are old and worn. I have almost completely rebuilt the suspension on my 190D with high quality parts (not uro or meyle) and it drives better than many new cars.

Wash the engine off! You need a main vacuum line, all the vacuum hoses, and likely the fuel return hoses.

looks like the heater core has been bypassed. proceed with caution there, it could be bypassed because its rusted out a hole.

After cleaning, I'd start with fuel filters and vacuum line replacement. Dump in the fuel tank startron diesel fuel conditioner, or power services Clear Diesel to treat all the sediment that is in your fuel tank...
Pull the valve cover and adjust the valves.
Drive it and evaluate what else the car needs...

Upper control arms,
Tie rods
Etc...
