91 350 SDL aux fan removal

The car has 2 aux fans. one went bad. How do you remove the fans. Looks like a number of plastic plugs in front but I can't get anything to move. My repair manual only shows a 1 fan system. Thought I'd would ask how before I do something stupid and screw something up.

Front bumper may need to come off (on a 124 car with the dual fan set-up, that is the normal procedure). The fan frame is held by plastic push-pin type fasteners, easy to pry out the center pin using a putty knife or similar.

I think the FSM is online?

Maxbumpo 10-23-2014 01:26 PM

Nope, the places I looked no longer have this manual online.

this is a 126 body. Tried to pry the center pin out but just busted the head off. Now that I know thats what it is for sure will try a few more.

I've had mine off before, but its been a long time so I don't remember. But i know for sure that I didn't have to remove the bumper.

got the plastic plugs out, had to cut the tops off and push the pins through. the outer cover is hung on both lower corners. are there pins that push into rubber mounts?

got it off. this unit will go thru a serious redisign when it goes back together.

Ya. From what I have seen the radiator and AC condenser have to come out to remove the fans.

on the 90 350 SDL the fans will come out the front but it is a real pain. Bought a couple of generic 12" fans and installed them with minor modification. redesigned for easy removal. We will see how they hold up. Put one on my 2002 Acura RSX and it seems to be holding up fine so far after a year.
