5 speed gearbox from T1 van - my recent experience FWIW

I know a lot are curious as to what these gearboxes are like, and there have been threads that touch on the subject before.

I bought a 240TD that had a 617.952 swapped into it from a '81 Euro import 300TD, and a 711.113 gearbox from a T1 van, now that combo is in my '78 300D.

This gearbox is the one with the 0.8 5th and 4.7 1st gear of course, you wouldn't want the other one...

First is under reverse, ie "dogleg", and the reverse light switch needs to be modified if using a 4 speed gear stick - my mechanic hasn't done this as he says to just start off in 2nd (which of course is 1st on the 4 speed gear knob). Second is very slow to take off with, turbo lag and all, have to fully floor it.

First and second gears (the real 2nd!) are unsynchronised (I think), they whine a bit, and need double clutching when changing down - also very hard to go 3rd>2nd with cold gearbox oil, no matter how hard I try my trucker skills!

Also makes a bit off a strange noise when lugging the engine (accidentally! still getting used to it, but I'm sure that it's vibration related.

I hope that this gearbox will be a good choice for super duper engine mods later on.

Edit:
Have a slipping clutch issue, mechanic swapped the clutch diaphragm / pressure plate from the old box but it still does it when really hoofing it, it keeps my right foot at bay though so maybe it's a good thing, lol

Interesting! I would have warned that this gearbox might have been too bulky to fit in a sedan. Thinner lube might help with the shifting....or synthetic.

Will look into that, mechanic changed fluid when he had it in is workshop so not sure what else I can do, assuming ATF is what's in it now

Is the clutch bled properly? Sometimes "weird ****" happens when it isn't.

I don't even know if the slave cylinder was even disconnected when the gearbox was swapped, the clutch does work fine aside from the occasional slip. Might bleed it anyway next weekend as the line might be full of gunk.

Was going to look for the redline MTF but not sure if it's available here in NZ. I do have a half full DX III container in the shed to use anyway though.

I think you are much better off sticking with the ATF for the gearbox as specified by Mercedes - don't waste your money trying other products
