Loss of power
Hello All,
My first post so please be gentle. I have a 1987 6cyl. 300D ( Non turbo ) . It starts OK and runs reasonably well , but does not have a lot of power, when cold. After driving it for an hour or two, it has absolutely NO power and appears to running on only 5 ( or perhaps even less ) cylinders. The hotter the day the worse it becomes. The temp. of the engine is fine and it is NOT overheating. Park it. Let it cool for a few hours and its ready to go again. This is repeatable and is definitely worse in summer than in winter. As summer is approaching ( southern hemisphere ) and I live in Australia where summer temps become quite high, I am dreading driving the beast. Putting the aircon on is simply not an option as the power it draws from the engine means starting off from lights etc is very slow and difficult. Injectors and glow plugs have been replaced as have the fuel filter and fuel strainer in the tank.. Could it be injector timing ? Or as I suspect a fuel issue. Any and all help appreciated Greg |

hey Greg.
Good to see another Victorian on here. I wonder if you still have a fuel supply problem. Take it for a drive with say 1/2 tank & the fuel cap off. if there is improvement then the tank breather is blocked. Mud wasps like to nest in them. if that makes no difference, then next try removing the fuel return to tank line & put it into a 2ltr orange juice container. Go for a drive & see if it fills, if not there is a fuel supply pressure issue. hope you have a clean air cleaner element. Make sure the accelerator linkage is adjusted to give full throttle.

Hello again,
The story so far. 1. Aircleaner clean and fitted correctly 2. Fuel tank vent ( fitted under the vehicle directly above the rear axle ) . Hmmmmmmmm If it is a valve its not working. It allows air to go through it in BOTH directions. If it is meant to allow air to transit to and from the fuel tank its OK. 3. Used a compressor and blew air up the vent pipe and it appears to be clear. 4. Haven't checked the fuel return flow yet. As I need to drive the vehicle for an hour or so it may take a little while before I can try it again. Regards Greg |
