#17 Cyl. Head Prep.
Hi Folks,
I bought a #17 head off of a 92 300SD and the machine shop I sent it to to be checked for warpage and cracks said its good after 40psi water tank pressure test. I pretty much got a complete head with valve cover, cam, cam towers, prechambers, valves and injectors and some other bits. I dont need it right away and bought it just in case my #14 head goes south. I wanted advice on next steps. Machine shop says they recommend minor machining because there are some gasket imprints leftover after they cleaned it. The head has enough material to be machined and is within FSM spec. I am thinking that there may be some fitment problems when it actually goes on the engine its intended for that would need to be machined anyway. Is that common and would it probably need to be machined twice? While its apart, I probably should have all the other parts checked and cleaned then reassembled to spec, right? Or are the valves and lifters on the 603 pretty bullet proof? Whats the best way to store the whole thing...is cosmoline still around(half serious)? Any other thoughts and wisdom is greatly appreciated. Thanks Treetops Pics of the head before I sent it to the shop |

Install new lifters if the ones in the car are somewhat old or unknown age... easier to do it while everything is apart.
I just did a #22 head on my 300D, it sat in the trunk of the car for almost a year and was fine. The cam lobes however were not, they got a little surface rust on them so I just re-used the cam that was in the engine and it is fine so far. If the valves are straight they're probably fine. I would check the valve springs to make sure they're in spec, and if not or really close to being out just replace them. I got mine from the dealer and they were like $5-6/each.

Thanks for the replies, I have to do some more reading up on the the valves and seals. Im guessing the lifters may be due for a change, the engine had 232K miles on it.
Earl, shop wanted me to remove the cover, cam, glow plugs and injectors. Id say take off the EM. Ideally they would have liked the prechambers out too, but neither I nor them had the tool to get retainer(??) out so they worked around it. Cleaning and pressure testing was under about 100 w/tax. I have the lock ring tool for rental, 6 pack of good beer + dp + shipping both ways.
Personally, I would do nothing to it until you need it. Oil and seal it and put it somewhere safe. With that many miles I would minimally hand lap the valve seats.
