Hello,

My car is a 1982 300SD. 182K with new rear rotors and pads on rear at 175K.

When driving at say over 30 MPH and when I make a long sweeping right turn I hear what sounds like a rubbing noise, groining sound, coming from the rear of the car that in in sync with the rotation of the wheel. You can barely hear it but it is there. It is not alarming at all more of an annoyance.

After coming out of the turn, and straightening up the steering wheel, the noise goes away. It only does it when making right turns at speeds over say 30 MPH.

When the noise is not present I hear no unusual bearing noise.

My question is

1.could I have a pending rear bearing failure that is allowing some movement back there and after 182K should rear wheel bearing be replaced?

2.I use an indy for repairs is it difficult to replace rear bearings?

3. could it just be a pad hanging up that needs cleaning

It could be cv noise. When they get old there will be a place they have traveled more than any other. When changing ride height like over a dip there might be a vibration. Turning a corner might do it too. It is not a sign of imminent failure but a sign that they are old. Squirting grease into the cv with a needle might help.

I will take car to Indy and have him check the Sway bar link and the CV's.

I was wondering if I would WD-40 the Sway bar link once I find it?

if it's the link, you will need a new one... they are plastic, and they break, and hit the wheel on corners.

The rear end will feel surprisingly unstable too if they break.

I would pull the back rotors off (fairly easy) and check the drum (parking brake) and shoes. Loose rust may be causing the noise. Look for areas that indicate rubbing and clean. Bearings are probably a little loose to cause this but try the simple things first. Don't panic and spend $$$$ on a problem that may not exist. If it gets a lot worse it will become apparent what the real problem is.

Metallic grinding noises only in hard turns are usually wheel bearings. It's a not a complicated job, but you need a very beefy bearing puller or press. After so many years, the bearing races very much like to stay put, they really make you work for it. Any decent shop will be able to do the job.

A sway bar usually thwacks around, producing hard knocking sounds on turns and uneven roads, but not a grinding sound.

I was at Indy today but will have to set appointment next week, he was covered up. I mentioned sound to him, he is thinking warped rotor as possibility, but we will check all these good ideas.

It runs quiet otherwise and only does it on right "at speed" turns like curves over 30 MPH, but clears, goes away, when you get straight after you leave the turn.
