These guys did on radio what we do here...

Tom Magliozzi, Co-Host Of NPR's 'Car Talk,' Dies At 77

A sad day INDEED! I love that show, listen to the podcasts on long car trips. Rarely had time to listen during the broadcast. Great great show.

Sad to go so young. I think Tom played the dimmer brother, though both were Phd in Engineering grads from MIT. I liked that Tom had an old Dodge Dart, like me. It seemed like they answered every question off the cuff, without a support staff researching in the background.

I recall one old M-B question. For a stuck key, they suggested "bad tumbler", while I yelled "no, broken spring detent inside the steering lock housing" since that happened to me a month earlier. They also laughed off a lady in Santa Cruz with a bad heater core, saying she didn't need heat there, then changed to "well if you lived in San Diego". I was just then listening to my son whine about the bypassed heater core in my 1984 300D he was using in San Diego, so Ray and Tom backed me up.

I didn't know they were off the air. I don't get to listen to them often. Always funny but I disagree with their diagnosis often... fun show. Sad news

They went off air near the end of 2012, a retirement after 35 years on air. Pretty awesome career. I still listen to the re-aired episodes via NPR's Car Talk podcast each week.

I too didnt know they retired, love that show. Always looked forward to it on Saturdays

Thats a bummer. I fondly remember listening to them with my Grandfather when I was younger.

End of an era. It must be sad for Ray, losing who I imagine is not just his brother but his best friend.

When they were on and I was traveling or just driving around town I'd listen to them. They're still on the air with old shows. Often they'd give good advice I thought, helping people decide if something was an emergency or not, whether to keep a car limping along and so forth.

I never thought one was smarter than the other but Tom was more likely to poke fun at himself and Ray a little more reserved in his presentation.

A curious combination of comedy and the technical....always fun and a lot less irritating than Dr. Zorba Paster on your health which comes on NPR Saturday morning. Zorba's advice is always good and his fake laugh always very very irritating!

Sadly, Garrison Keillor is up there as well in age and has already had problems. Two of my favorite shows on the air hands down.

t walgamuth 11-04-2014 08:37 AM

I love Kiellor's show but always think about changing the station when he sings. Groan! I often wonder what the professional singers think when they have to share the mike with him.;)

As us old guys - well - age - there is (and always has been) a changing of the guard. RIP Tom and I hope whatever comes along will be as entertaining.

In the early days of their show they were a little too smart@$$ and not helpful enough, evidently not realizing that most folks don't know much about their cars and really NEED the info. After a while they sort of mellowed out and while they were still humorous there was less "I know something you don't know" and more "Here's probably your problem". I liked the newer stuff better.

I'm well aware of my own mortality but I hope to just croak and not linger like Alzeimer's (see - I can't remember how to spell that!) visits on it's sufferers. "The long goodby"........

I had heard that they were going off the air but hadn't realized that it had already happened. Alzheimer's is rough. Sorry that he's gone. I listened to them for a long time. There comes a time when you know all of the oldies played on the radio - and remember when they were new.

t walgamuth 11-04-2014 09:55 AM

They are still on in reruns.

yuke 11-04-2014 09:57 AM

I really liked click + clack also read their advice in paper all the time and for the most part thought it was good sound advice did not know they were on the radio not enough free time to listen anyway. In this day and age with the mechanical rates at and above $100/hr. if you have an old car you better be able to do most repairs youself. I find this site to be very helpful in keeping my almost 30 yr. old 300SD on the road. Maybe there will be someone out there that can replace click + clack but I doubt it I liked their humor.
