1987 190D - transmission issues
The transmission in my 190D is going bad. It will not shift out of 1st or 2nd really.
I have done the basic maintenance on it and it did not improve. I have called a couple of shops in Tacoma where I live and they want like 2-3k to put a rebuilt into it. They would not do the rebuild. Does anyone know a shop in the Seattle Tacoma area that would actually rebuild the transmission in this one? |

the 722.4xx trans is fairly common, being used in nearly everything from 85 to 93 so parts should be a non issue... see if you can find one in a pullapart type place... maybe source at the parts yards...

I have had this car since April and not one single Diesel has 190d has been in the yards within 100 miles of my house.
I bought the car thinking that it would be fairly easy to pick one up in a yard, but that has not happened. |

By the way 190e's all day long in the yards.
I also originally thought - worst case I could use a transmission from one of those, but everyone has said it is not so easy and probably not going to work. |

practically any 124 or 201 will have the .4xx transmission... and swapping the valve body from yours into the donor should be enough to get it working in your car.

I have 2 transmissions from W124 300's.
I was told that they were too wide for the tunnel on the W201. I should just pull the tranny out of the W201 and actually see. |

It depends on the year. A 124 equipped with a 2.5 turbo motor will have a 722.4, which will fit. The turbo transmission has five plates in each clutch pack, so it's stronger. You would have to swap bowden cables. The output flange may also be bigger, which would require you to swap tails. But I don't think one of these will be any easier to find than a 190D transmission.

My 190d is the 2.5 non-turbo.

Without knowing where you are located, I would consider looking for a 190e manual and do the swap; there are lots of threads on the conversion. I have a complete setup in the barn reserved for the day when it becomes necessary.

I am in the Seattle/Tacoma area.
Doing the swap was also my plan, but I have not seen a manual 190e in the area for a reasonable price. Nor have any shown up in the local yards. It would be ideal to find a manual. |

I also have a 190d with the same problem. It happened a long time ago. I did a search on this forum and found some guys here that had a discussion about a plastic part of the governor breaking. About a 15$ part from the dealer. Also a diy job !
While you are in there, you should replace the B2 piston. Also a diy. Do a search. Tom search google http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/308281-help-stuck-road-722-3-no-3rd-4th-gear.html Last edited by gozapper; 11-08-2014 at 10:16 PM. Reason: add on |

Can u get by with a $15 fix?
I just posted about my 1991 300d, wouldn't shift out of first the other day, at 191k.
A MB shop wanted $3,400 to install a rebuilt into it. On this forum, I found that the problem MIGHT be a plastic gear that is about $15. To do this, the tail would have to be removed, and the plastic gear by the governor replaced. Find a diagram (email me if you don't have one), and it's probably part #50 and #145 on the MB diagram. |

Try unplugging the kickdown switch, I had a 300sd that would not shift. It would just keep revving up as you drove it and wouldn't shift. I unplugged the kickdown switch and problem went away. Give it a try it takes a second

If you can get it to Portland, ATS (Automatic Transmission Service) is the shop of choice for the dealer and the independents in town. Talk to Dave.
The upshift problem is common with these transmissions. Does reverse "hesitate" to engage? If so, the clutch bands for reverse fall off in bits into the fluid clogging the filter and the pump. Somtetimes the pump will actually suck up part of the filter because the media is so clogged causing all kinds of problems. A complete rebuild may not be necessary. Maybe just the reverse bands, b2 piston, and seals. I just spoke to the guy two days ago about this. He always rebuilds your transmission. He doesn't do the exchange thing like Deans in Seattle does (also a good shop).

The N/A 2.5 190Ds (1986, 1987) are very desirable these days. When I bought mine in 2006 I caught a lot of flak from diesel "purists." A $3k transmission is worth it IMHO if the engine and body are in good shape.
