still more vac pump ID confusion!
I've read about half a dozen threads on vac-pump concerns, but if any made it authoritatively clear that my pump is or is not to be worried over, I couldn't find it mentioned. It's got seven screws on the front face...I've seen mention of "four screws" described as being a not-to-worry model, but nothing on seven.
It wouldn't be hard for me to take it out now what with a bunch of stuff out of the way, but...if that's necessary, what to look for? (I really prefer not to replace it 'just to be safe', since I'm suddenly incurring a lot of other parts expenses...) W126 1983 300SD Thanks - Dave

The potential problem is with the OM601,2,3 engines, not the OM615,6,7.

Thi serious failure is with the 60x motors, but the 61x motor pumps do fail also. Mine did. No warning, it just killed my motor in my SD

Your Year and Model W126 1983 300SD most likely does not have the Bearing with the Plastic Ball Bearing Cage in it unless someone installed an earlier Vacuum Pump.
The other issue that Kills even new Vacuum Pump is there is a Engine Problem. There is a bushing in back of the Timer Gear that if worn and gets too much End Play it cause damage to the Vacuum Pump Piston. So that means there is no way to know what is going on with that Bushing without checking the Timer End Play. I have had My Vacuum Pump off the Engine 2 times for inspection but have never checked the timer end Play partly because to do it Properly I believe you need to remove the Timing Chain Tensioner. Most People are not pulling the Vacuum Pump just to check that. But, I guess someone could. If you have a Vacuum Pump Failure and you look at the Piston and the Piston is cracked in a manner that looks like the shaft was getting pulled through the Piston don’t install a new Vacuum Pump till you check the Timer End Play. consolidating to other thread
Thanks for the replies, divergent as they are. I asked a similar question, after later coming across a thread that's more on point (though it's similarly inconclusive) at http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/347283-ball-bearing-vacuum-question.html#post3405098 and that's where I will probably ride this out...
