Om617 possibly blow out oil gallies valve train

Getting ready to dig into the valve train on my om617. Can I blow out the oil gallies to make sure there's no sludge. Pics could be helpful.

Also torque specs for the cam and rocker towers?

If sludge is present, you'll see it under the valve cover I don't think blowing out is wise. Clean what you work on, then use synthetic oil with regular oil changes, you'll be fine

Don't worry too too much about sludge just yet - take a look at it first.

Here's FSM chapter for the removal and refit of the camshaft

http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/outside/12265/disc_2/program/Engine/617/05-220.pdf

I suggest you do some more reading of the FSM particularly on the removal and installation of the tensioner

Heh... Chevy drivers likely never change their oil... I think when you get the cover off the motor, you will be amazed how clean everything is... BLACK, but not sludgy

OK... this should not apply in your case... I am just going to share something from way back...
In the event an oil passage was found to be blocked.....
like if one were taking an engine block to be VATTED....
I have heard of mechanics taping one end of the passage with pipe threads which fit standard ... or even larger..... GREASE FITTINGS......then a regular grease gun can apply a LOT of pressure to blow out the passage...

It is also plausible to use compressed air but you need to study the oil passage ways in the FSM and block off certain areas so you don't push muck into plain bearings and other assembled parts. This approach is only really suitable with the engine dismantled.

If you've got to the stage where the engine is dismantled then you really ought to be removing the ball bearings from the end of the main path ways as per the FSM and cleaning the whole thing out properly.

Still the first stage is to see if there is any gunk.
