Manual Climate Control Illumination
I have been in the process of a complete wiring harness swap from the rusty Euro '85 300TD I used to drive to the not rusty Federal '85 300TD that I drive now. There were several reasons I wanted to do the swap, but it was mainly for the ABS and the manual climate control. I have the harness in and I am mostly sure it is connected the way it was in the old car based on pictures I took during disassembly. My question for others with manual climate control is this. Is the illumination in your fan speed and temperature switches on anytime the ignition is on? I don't recall it being this way before, but most of the bulbs were probably burned out too. I went through and replaced all of the bulbs while doing the swap. Regardless of my headlight switch position, if the ignition is on, the climate control and window switch lights are on. My hazard switch light is also on, but the A/C temperature wheel only lights up when I turn the headlights on. Is this normal?
Thanks!

In my '78 240D all interior illumination is only when the headlights are on.

Same here on our 1980 240D, only when the Head Light Switch is on.
Sounds like ya got ur wires crossed some place. You probably have it connected to a 12v hot when the ignition is on. Charlie
