Oil consumption

82 300D

Well just rolled in new timing chain and while in there I replaced my valve stem seals. Guessing I must of messed a seal up or something because now I am burning oil at about a quart every 200 miles. Before I did this work I never had to add oil at all. Always full till next oil change. Any suggestions other than change valve stem seals or any one know a way to check which one may be leaking.

I bought the seals from this site. Not sure if they are the ones you are talking about. I used a larger diameter washer that fit snuggly around the valve stem and used it to press down on the seals. Felt like they all seated correctly. I did recheck the oil and it hasn't burnt off as much as first suggested. (Didn't realize how much lower the dipstick shows when engine is running then after its shut down and sat for a bit). However it has lost some oil in the 200 miles in which I have driven and can for sure tell it is smoking a lot more than before changing these.

Is the smoke more when you apply throttle ?
Have you done anything to the Injection system ?

Ya when you apply the throttle it smokes more. Once the car is up to temp it only gives a small puff when at idle but when you step on throttle a little it picks up. Also feel like the amount of smoke when you take the oil filler off has increased. I did nothing to the injection system other than I changed one of the return lines cause it was leaking.

I can't think of anything else...
You made no other changes to anything...
and you are sure your ip is set correctly?
Did you use the drip method to set the ip after you rolled the chain in?

No I haven't checked the IP. When I rolled the chain in everything lined up as far as cam tower and the indicator on harmonic balancer. Wasn't sure if I needed to check it. Need to do some research on how to check it I guess and will try that next.

Is this thread the correct way to check the IP timing like you suggest?
PeachPartsWiki: How to Set IP Timing via the Drip Tube Method
Should be set to 23-25 degrees BTDC

Yes, cam towers not accurate enough to trust.
set it that way and test it..
You should also read about it in the FSM....

Just wanted to give an update. I checked the IP timing and found it to be set at about 19degrees. Adjusted it to 24 using the air bubble method. Ordered the drip tube but hasn't shown up yet so had to get it done today. After adjusting it, the engine is so much smoother running and has no smoke at all after about 15 seconds after start up. Also before hand after starting the car I had to hold the throttle a little to keep rpm up for about 2-3 minutes to keep it running at least when it is cold. Now after starting it idles better and don't have to keep rpm up.
Not sure the thoughts of the method I used but it was my only option but it made a big difference on how the car runs. May try the drip method after I get the tube and see just how close the two are compared to each other.
The oil consumption has slowed down so not sure the cause of that but I wont complain.

Yes, when the drip tube comes in..... use that to set your IP.... and read up in the archives on procedure ....particularly for having enough and constant pressure so you can judge the one drip per second.

Heavy base oil consumption with the fuel injection timing off only that much is interesting. Something that members should keep in mind perhaps.
