Intermittant Batt light at idle 350SDL

1991 350 SDL- got a no start from dead batt, charged battery, changed voltage regulator, metered 13.5 VDC at batt. Thinking it was good but next time out got a dim batt light indication at idle. Put in a known used voltage reg and it worked good for about a week then dim glow batt indication came back. Where is the diode? Is it line replaceable? Is that the other plug in accessory on the back of the alternator.? before I change the ALT what are the trouble shooting steps?

TBH, I'd just dump the wimpy 70 amp alternator and install a bigger one (along with a clutched pulley).

I installed the 110A alternator from a later gas motor on my car along with the clutched pulley (new) for a 606 engine. The stock wiring hooked up fine, I just had to lengthen the exciter wire a short bit.

The belt tension did seem loose and I found the pulley tensioner out of alignment. The bearings on the tensioner are worn out. When I took the belt off and removed the shock absorber and spring the rocker arm flops around. So a tensioner off of a 606 will bolt right on and replace the shock absorber and spring? And is the 12mm alan head bolt that holds the tensioner arm right hand thread or left hand threads?

Not the belt tensioner, the alternator pulley. With the larger alternator you need to install a pulley with a one way clutch to avoid beating up on the belt tensioner.

Is there any replacement for that crappy tensioner that roars at idle or do I just need to order a new one?

Just order a new one. Replace everything while you're in there, the tensioner arm, roller, and the covers if they're broken or missing.

The spring on mine actually failed a few thousand miles ago...
