Question My 190D 5-speed lost speedometer and odometer

I am guessing it's cable driven, so likely the cable, not the odo gear, since BOTH went out at the same time...

I'll look under the car for the cable to have fallen out, but suspect it may have broken.
Zero warning. Drove up to Oakboro today no issues. Went to leave, poof, no speedo...

Hints?

Take cluster out, drive the car, if the cable turns, the speedometer and odometer dont work. If it doesnt turn the its the cable. Try that and and see what happens

As the owner of a 190D, I can understand vstech's preference to crawl under the car: getting the cluster out isn't easy for those of us with big hands, and there isn't enough slack to pull it out and then slip your hand behind to undo the speedo cable (as I can do on my 240D). Although, if he CAN pull his cluster out that would signal that the speedo cable isn't screwed onto the cluster anymore!

In case anyone stumbles onto this thread far in the future, here is how I undo the speedo cable on my 190D: there is a heater hose running side to side under dash, under the cluster. You can undo one end of that hose, and pull it down. This creates a small hole to snake your hand up there to undo the speedo cable.

I understand, thats true. I got my cluster out by just taking some small pick tools putting them gently behind the cluster and start wiggling it out. I was able to undo everything by hand. Everyone has there own way, whatever works.

Unhook the side and spin the inside of the cable. The resistance should tell you. Just don't spin it backwards 😏

what would be the issue spinning it backwards?

I will have to play with the odometers I have sitting around.. When I was doing testing and repair work on the one I just shipped this morning I would often get the drill direction backwards I dont recall observing the gears running backwards when I had the drill in the wrong direction. I could be wrong though.

My 190D 5-speed lost speedometer and odometer

Good to know. They cracked down at some point with the ability to do that.
You repair gauges for people? I'll be looking for a 115 240D cluster eventually. Will this have electronic temp? I'm swapping diffs. My odometer doesn't work. My temp gauge (mechanical) didn't work. My clock didn't work. So I put a temp gauge where my clock was. I popped the power source for the clock out and drilled the board to fit temp stuff through. I broke a circuit and jumped it with a wire. My rheostat as well.

I only warn you before you mention a core change.

And I'm hijacking again.

The unit in question was a W124 unit so it could entirely be possible for some of the older models.

I done a fair amount of gauge repair work, primarily 124/201/126 types. Nothing older than 1980 yet.

More hijacking...sorry. ha.

Here are some photo albums of my work in case your interested:

Drop me an email and we can discuss your cluster needs further. I'm happy to do whatever work you'd like. I generally don't have core charges as most of the clusters are pulled from the car and sent in. I don't have whole units laying around. I do have some spare parts though.
