Noise when accelerating, when heat is on...

I have a 1985 300SD. If I accelerate somewhat hard from a dead stop or slow roll while the heat is on, I hear a squealing noise from the engine area. If i take my foot off the accelerator and turn off the climate control, then hit the peddle... NO SQUEAL. Has anyone had this occur with their vehicle?

Not myself but if you can turn the alternator by the cooling fins behind the pulley the belt is too loose. Your blower motor is making the alternator deliver more current and with a loose belt it squeels.

A test if you are uncertain is to take a bar of face soap and rub it on the vee face of the belts or belt. Noise gone it is either a loose or very bad belt or belts on the alternator.

Update... I replaced the water pump (with some complications) and the sound went away. So, it may have been the water pump, or perhaps when I reassembled, I may have tightened up the belts more. However, the belts seemed pretty tight on the alternator to begin with...

Thinking of selling this 1985 300SD. Should I post a message on this forum if and when I want to sell it?

Especially because of the issues with the harmonic balancers on these cars. My tensioning of the alternator belts is simply. I tighten them till I can no longer turn the alternator fan by hand.

Most new belts I have installed over the years either stretch a little or in conforming to the old pulleys need a retensioning not too long after the initial installation. One way to avoid this may be to overtighten belts initially but that also may cause undo stress.
