Most important question ever posted here for older cars.

For your rear view mirror, how do you orient the dimmer tab during normal daytime driving?

Option A: daytime drive with the tab pulled toward the driver, then flip it away from you to create the dimming effect at night.

Option B: daytime drive with the tap pushed away from the driver and toward the front of the car, and then flip it toward you to create the dimming effect.

Both will achieve the same effect (assuming you adjust the mirror appropriately), but I was curious if there is a standard way. Or perhaps this is like which way do you orient the toilet paper on the roller.

I prefer the look of the tab with it pulled toward the driver, so I leave it that way as much as possible (Option A). But I am starting to realize I may have it backwards from the norm.

(Clearly this isn't the most important question ever, so please forgive the hyperbole. And clearly this has little to do with diesels, but since both of my cars are diesel, the question does actually pertain to compression ignition MBs. I just thought it would be a fun way to start the day.)

the most important question ever.....
Not what I was expecting... "most important" questions usually take the form of something like these
  • What oil should I run?
  • What anti freeze should I use?
  • Should I run a K&N air filter?
  • What fuel should I use?
  • Can I run waste vegetable oil/ATF/WMO/anti freeze in my car
  • What's the best tire?
  • What color should I paint my car?

Lol. I pull the tab to dim the mirror. Toilet paper roll orientation should be reversed if you have cats.

Not that this should turn into a toilet paper discussion instead of a dimmer tab discussion, I never thought of that (reversing the roll if cats use the bathroom), and it makes sense. By "reversed" I assume you mean the paper hangs off the back, so the cat winds the paper on the roll instead of off. Evidently you speak through experience. Could it be that you won the prize on America's Funniest Home Videos for the video of your cat unrolling an entire roll of TP while sitting on the toilet?

Pop the rear view mirror off, and never look back!

Opens up a whole new space for seeing where you're going and stop worrying about who's following you. The only good they can do is shine light in your eyes anyway. But chances are you're last in the pack anyway and nobody is behind.

Those creatures are the devils watch dogs on earth. Roomate had one in college and it would do just that. First attempt was keeping the door closed. That didn't happen. Finally I googled for solutions.

I'm on a ranch now and adopt feral cats. They live in the barn and catch mice. The other night I had the garage window open as I left the golf cart charging. They busted the screen out and pissed on my tools. And I'm the one that feeds them. Devils I tell you. Little tiny Devils with silent feet.

Now it's a cat discussion.

I had this truck we called the doomsday prepper. Cummins dually with a nasty flatbed and Texas cattle pusher on the front. All windows blacked out. 50% on the windshield and limo banners on top and bottom. I smashed a lot of stuff, and put cameras on the outside. Camera rear view for the back, digital lcd screens on the visors for the sides. It was pretty cool.

I Gotta get to work. Lol.

The actual way is listed in the manual.

I'm ditching mine soon for a auto dimming home link mirror from rik.

I've never used the toggle on the bottom of a rearview mirror.

The best thing I ever did was get 20% tint on my rear window.

Mine does it automatically

In the W123 it seems normal position is with tab towards the driver.

In my (former) 190E, normal position is with tab away from driver. With this car, I leave it in normal position until I get glare. When glare is gone I flip back to normal position again. They will *not* have the same effect. Flipping to dim position during daytime gives me the reflection of the headliner.

That's me!

Important question: Should I use pure nitrogen to fill my tires? I've been using my super dee duper custom mix of gasses that I have optimized for long life and availability and economy of supply, it's around 78% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and the rest is a smattering of other gasses. Seems to work quite well.
