Vacuum pump diaphragm bolt toque etc.

Hello,

I don't have a manual for the girlfriend's '78 240D.

We pulled the vacuum pump, cleaned it, replaced the ball bearing with Nachi bearings from Japan.

I put new diaphragm in with the convex shape pointing up or forward towards the radiator.

I put blue Locktight on the diaphragm bolt and tightened it. Now there is no movement in the diaphragm when I compress the spring. Is the bolt supposed to not be tightened all the way down? What is the torque supposed to be?

I won't be the hero until we get it back on the car.

Thanks,
from the girlfriend and me...

You can access the manual at startekinfo.com, click on MB Workshop Resources, then Service Manual Cd/DVD, then 123 manual link. Then just click your way through until you get to the point where you can select your model and year. Then open the engine manual section to find the vacuum pump rebuild.

Follow the manual and you should be OK. Keep in mind that when installing the diaphragm it needs to be preloaded.

Thank you very much for that link!

I think we had it right but it was nice to see the pictures and read about it.

By the way I got the bearings for less than $5 each at VXB bearings.

How was it to replace the bearings? I would like to do that to mine, too.
