1991 350 SDL Howling noise from transmission area.
Good moring all,
I have a 1991 350 SDL and when i apply the brakes to slow down the car ( approaching a traffic light for example ) i hear a loud howling noise from under the car coming from the transmission area (??). This happens only at very slow speeds ..the last ten yards before i completeley stop the car and only when i touch the brake .... if i dont touch the brake pedal there is no howling noise... I had the same issue last year and my mechanic replaced both drive shaft mounts and bearings ( drive shaft support bearings and drive shaft support mounts ) and the noise went away for about a year. Now its back again ...... any ideas what will this be ? No issues with the transmission whatsoever...it shifts fine and very smooth... Thanks !!!! |

I would suggest that it might be a low speed brake squall (squeal). The pad might be able to move just enough to vibrate at low speed. Try to determine which side it is coming from. At low speed in a parking lot or on a side street you should be able to locate it.

Bearing again is not impossible. There are bearings sold out there that are junk on purpose. It has little to do with price. Intentional garbage in my opinion that do not last long.
For the few bearings I buy now I always buy from recommendations of people that know the good bad and ugly of modern bearing producers. Some Chinese bearings for example may be okay. My experience is to not take the risk of finding out again. Some of them lasted less than six months in service. |

Remember that the 350SD and SDL, unlike all other W126s, have a 3 piece driveshaft with 2 carrier bearings.... so you need to order 2 when it's time to refresh those parts
