Help Finding a OM617

Posted in the for sale/w.t.b. section, checked yards, Car Part (never got back to me), Craigslist, and eBay. I come up with nothing local. Anywhere else I should look?

Also, seems some folks are charging quite a bit for the wagon engines. What is a reasonable amount?

I am not picky about non-turbo or turbo, though prefer the latter.

If I can't find an engine, then guess will have to become a parts car. Just was hoping to get one more on the road.

Thank y'all in advance!

Ok... I see in your profile you are ' International Jewel Thief " which explains why you do not have your location showing in the upper right hand part of your posts...
That was such a good offer on a trade.... I suspect you could expand your title past ' Jewels ' .

LOL,,,, I missread your offer.... it is for an axle.... I thought you were being funny about a whole vehicle...

I understand that, as have a wagon. I bought this one for parts, but want to give it a chance, as think with a little work, make a great beater. Plus, I do need to weld and be nice not to have to learn on the Squareback.

I have thought if I can't find a wagon engine, will just have to find a non-turbo without the pump and either rebuild the head or swap in a kit. Right now the pump isn't hooked up. When I asked the owner who owned for 35,000 miles and two years, said he wondered why the rear end sagged... I don't even know if the lines are good, now that I think about it. Will go check if I can.

Thank you so very much!

Link doesn't work, but I know. I called a place today, and three engines went out the door and no more because clearing out the junk. I always seem to have the worst timing. I have seen two complete engines in the yard, but never got them due to the S.L.S. pump. I am sure one will turn up. In no hurry, but since y'all seem to want to get it back on the road, why not look?

Hey, are you saying look on the east coast?

Well, didn't really help. Did find this: Concord Auto , but once I found the price...

I wonder if $1,500 is too high for a wagon? Or is it worth it to spend more for a wagon engine?

Link comes up not found here too.

Check out car-part.com and follow the prompts. They ask for a zip code, but show everything they have listed.

I just entered my zip, on the east cost, but not a requisite to use there search engine.

You might be time and money ahead finding a running TD.

$1000.00

for sale or trade 1983 Mercedes 300td

Will the squareback pull a TD?

Thank you so very much!

I didn'tand don't want or need another, but figured could use the extra storage and parts. So, for now not going to fuss over it. If I find an engine, great. If not, sits on weedless gravel, so if I keep the weather out and with the windows tinted, shouldn't deteriorate too bad, if at all.

I wouldn't want to try, especially since the 1985 300TD-T would have a hard time towing its own. Why do you ask?

Does look like the market fell though. I paid way more than that for mine, but then they were hitting $15,000 for really nice ones.

As I said, that is what I am mostly using. Got parts though there before, and use to kind of judge prices. Though thank you for the suggestion.

You described a TD that needs a lot of work. Putting a fresh engine in it could be the beginning of a deep rat hole. An engine falling in your lap like the TD did is one thing. Spending money on an engine or looking further than you spit for one is going to end up costing you more than buying a running TD.

Well what's wrong with the engine. Probably can fix it cheaper than replacing engine?

Really? I was just going to get the engine set and run it. At least seemed y'all were confirming worth it.

Well then, are you saying hold and/or part?

Thank you so very much for the help!

What is wrong is the previous owner and his friend who is a "mechanic" use filtered W.V.O. cut with diesel (not in the tank, but out of a jug sitting in the cargo area). Also, there was no air filter. Engine itself has low compression in one cylinder, maybe another going. Looks like they did something to both (not all five) and got the compression up. Mechanic said piston slap and rings were bad. As of now, can't even get it to start.

The more I think about it, think you are going the direction I am. But, I would imagine full teardown is needed to get at the piston's rings, right?

If you are tearing down the engine, then almost seems bad to put it all back mostly the same. However, could, as had a mechanic that would sweep his floor and build an engine from it, and last amazing amount of time. Then when it goes, revaluate?

Again, no real hurry, just having fun thinking.
