300SDL 1987, 308,000 miles, drivers great,
today replaced the two engine shock dumpers,( the pass side lost gas)

when i took them apart, the top of the dumper shock, the two aluminum pieces,

came apart, the filler or bonding material was breaking into pieces,

so i put it back, with new shocks,

new one cost $120, on eBay and same at the dealer,

Q. did anybody glue it with JB weld, with success,

Or maybe it can work like that?

I stuffed fiberglass matt, soaked in epoxy in the gap (recall I posted). Worked for a while, then popped apart when the K-frame weld broke at the frame rail. Glad I didn't pay >$100 for a replacement since that would have been similarly damaged. I might try again, using polyurethane caulk (simpler). The rubber is probably just to allow slight tilting as the engine swings. BTW, one can live fine without the shock dampers. I understand they were mainly to stop a big shudder when the engine turns off. Such behavior could scare away the rich customers these cars sought.

This happened to my similar part on my 300D. You do not state what model and year you have but by the part it looks newer than my 84 300D.

Nonetheless, I did some reading here on the forum and found that the fix is to purchase some pourable two part urethane rubber. I bought some Flexane 80 Liquid from Zoro.com. I have not used it yet but it seems pretty straightforward and puts back in there the original stuff. To purchase the replacement part for me would be around $170. Ouch. The urethane is way less than that.

Without the shock dampers I suspect you will wear out your motor mounts much sooner that with shock dampers.

there is a thread on here somewhere, where the put fender washers between the two parts, and cinched everything together metal to metal... better than nothing.

There are also threads where the mount is cleaned out and refilled with some type of pourable urethane or such. I found some locally at an industrial supply. It worked well. I recently installed new motor mounts (again) and had cause to check the damper mounts. All is well and it ws much less expensive than buying over priced shock mounts..

I may fill the motor mounts. They seem to settle and can threaten the oil cooler line. I haven't found a definitive answer regarding the expected/correct installed height of the motor mounts.

Note Vstech's tip to install the engine mounts loose until the center bolt is ligned up and threaded. It makes the process easy.
