Block Heater Cord Routing 98 E300
When I want to fiddle with my cars but there's nothing I really NEED to do I find unnecessary things to play with. This morning it was installing a block heater cord on my 98. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could access the heater from the top. Element works fine.
All the write-ups I've read route the cord down below, with access through the tow hold panel. I have no need/desire to do this. Shouldn't it be fine to have the cord accessible in the engine compartment, in effect routing it up, so long as it's not touching the manifold or the down pipe? Essentially what I did is routed it up and then between the air box and the expansion tank, securing with the air box clamps. Car can be locked and plug extends out by head light. This approach makes it very easy to remove the cord during Spring-Fall if I want to. While I don't really NEED a block heater in RI, I figure it's a nice way to baby the car as well as buy me some time if a glow plug or two goes out.
