anyone selling a 97 e300d in tbe bay area/Sacramento area?
I am interested in buying one in the $2500-$4k price range (depending on mileage, if the ac works, etc).
I did see there are some on Craigslist, but one the seller is a flake (said I wanted to come buy it, then tried to set up a bidding war with me and someone else and I said forget it), one has some pretty serious body damage, and the others are either $$$$$, can't get ahold of the seller, or have run veggie oil. But anyway, if anyone here has one they might want to part with let me know. |

Check craislist in SoCal. If you're adventurous, these cars are much cheaper and Dallas and Houston once you verify they're not flood victims.
Did you catch this one - 1997 mercedes diesel e300d ? Jeremy5848 bought his '96 from the seller of this one - 98 Mercedes E300 turboDIESEL, 30+ MPG! . Why would you not want a turbo? Sixto MB-less |

I did see that 97, I tried to contact the seller but didn't hear back. That's the only possibility of the ones on SF bay or sac Craigslist right now, I have confirmed that I don't want any of the others (either bad shape or seller I don't want to deal with).
I don't want a turbo because they have to pass emissions testing, which means not having any codes. From what I have read it can be difficult or impossible to fix some of the things that set codes on these, which would mean I couldn't register it either. I have driven both, and the 97 seems to have enough power that I wouldn't mind. |

The non-turbos don't have to pass emissions? I ask because they have their own set of issues regarding the intake - resonance flaps and EGR, which can throw codes.

Only 98 and up have to pass emissions here.

My bluetec just had its smog test done. Guy opened the hood, looked at the engine, shut hood 3 sec's later and passed it.

Yeah I don't think they do too much extensive testing for diesels, but for sure having codes stored in the computer will make it fail. Do most of the 98-99 cars have problems with that? Or are the 96-97 cars worse. Pretty much every non turbo has had the check engine light on (the only one I actually checked was p0200 injector circuit malfunction). I only looked at 1 turbo car, it didn't have any codes but was expensive and had lots of other problems.
I know w210s will never be perfect, but I think the om606 makes them more fun to drive than the older diesels. If I could get one that would at least stay running properly and the heater working for a few years and not have to spend more than $2-3k a year on maintenance and repairs id be happy with that. |

Good point. We lucked out with our '97 Suburban td but it doesn't throw codes
There isn't a lot of chatter on this forum about 98-99 E300s throwing codes that can't be sorted. Certainly not enough to concern me. Terry, how many miles did you put on your '99 and how often did you see the CEL? Sixto MB-less |

I finally got ahold of them and went to look at it, it has been sitting at a shop for a long time, its filthy (inside, outside and under the hood), and the registration has been expired for months. I said I would be interested if they got it registered, but they said the buyer would be dealing with that, so I left. Anyway, I'm still looking if anyone has one, or for that matter any w210 diesel under $4500 and less than 250k miles would be interesting. I know they last longer than that, but id like to avoid having to do a suspension rebuild right away so lower mileage would be nice.
