w123: charging light on dash dimly lit when key OFF

I wrote a longer thread on what happened with my '85 300d tonight, that hasn't got any traction yet.

Right now I think I have some of the issues under control.

Right now my urgent question isL I am wondering why I would have the charging light dimly lit up when the key is OFF.

Update: Found an answer, likely internal failure in alternator. Actually better than I was expecting, I was concerned I had had a wiring meltdown.

Tried to delete the thread, couldn't. Weird.

There is a short in the circuit; I'd say a diode went out in your alternator.

The short is likely internal to your ignition switch, not the alternator.

I can delete the threads that need deleting. This one is ok to leave up, as dim battery light pointing to the alternator is good info for a novice searching for a solution.

The forum actually frowns on deleting threads.

I hope not. I just replaced the steering lock assembly, the electrical switch and the tumbler, in August.

I am inclined to think it's the alternator.

When I tried to charge the battery with the cables connected, the charger shut down and gave a fault code first that the battery had been discharged too far to take a recharge. When I tried resetting the charger a few times the fault code changed to "no battery detected."

I put on a 2A trickle charger and it auto shut down as well after about 5 secs.

When I took the cables off and connected the charger to the battery alone, the charger began to work fine. Though I am not convinced the battery is actually taking the charge.

You explained this before, I forgot.

If you want to delete my original and more detailed info-dump thread from 6:35 p.m., that would probably not hurt anyone.
