1985 300D Turbo Fuel Gauge Acting Strange

While driving down the road, my fuel gauge went from E to F a few times- kind of flickering- then went to E and stayed there.
2 days later, it hops back to life. I don't necessarily trust it, of course. And I need to get it straight.
Where to begin?
Thanks in advance.

It's assessable under the rear parcel shelf iirc. Long aluminum tube with 3 pin connector Inside is a float on two very thin wires and a contacter close to the bottom to alert for RES fuel.

Of course it could be a loose multi pin connector on back of cluster.http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/110310213473?lpid=82&chn=ps

You probably need to remove the Fuel Sending Unit and clean the gunk out of it.
Here is a good thread that covers it.
