What did you use for the injector lines at the injectors?

I didn't touch the injectors, but did remove/loosen some of the injector lines. I am sure you know, (but for those that don't) the nuts are a little smaller than 19mm, but a little larger than 18mm. The exception being the one on the high pressure pump (17mm). I am not sure what others have done, or what tool was used, but I just used the 19mm. Yes I could have used an adjustable wrench (thought about it after the job was done). I am confident that I got all of the nuts close enough to the proper torque (turn enough wrenches in your life, and you will have a good idea of what is too much or too little). I did find a fuel leak in the fuel filter (water sensor? in the center of the filter), so I replaced the two Orings. That may have been part of the dripping that was seen on the ground, but I am sure the bad oil cooler seals was the majority of it.......Rich
EDIT: To further explain, I didn't remove the rails or lines going to each injector. I just loosened the nuts on the rail end, and removed the rail mounting bolts.

Did you have any problems with the electrical connectors?

Not really. They all came apart without too much drama, some easier than others. I used a small screwdriver to work each side loose once the locking tab was pushed in. I did not want to pull on the wires, and most connectors were hard to get a grip on. I know there is a special tool for removing them, but my method seemed to work just fine.

Bummer!

I did have to clear a few codes. Just for fun I laid a couple rows of rubber to make sure everything was working good!
It has been less than a month, and the car was involved in a collision. It will likely be totaled. It was the other drivers fault. They are looking at a 2016 E250 Bluetec. The good news for me, is that they are willing to let me buy the car for the buyback amount (salvage). I am sure I can repair it. No airbags deployed, and it appears to have no frame damage.

As luck would have it, they bought a car almost exactly the same today (over the phone) in Phoenix. Dave will be flying out on Saturday to finalize the deal and drive it back. What is interesting is that the old car (07) says Bluetec on the trunk lid, and the new car (also an 07) says CDI. I am pretty sure it has the V6 (at least that is what I read in the ad, but it might be wrong). In my opinion the inline six is better. Could this car actually have an inline six? Or did they badge some of the early 07's with CDI?

I was quite certain the breakpoint between the OM648 (inline 6) and the OM642 (V6) happened between 2006 and 2007 MY in the W211.

We have a 2008 ML320 CDI (W164) that has the OM642 but without the SCR (AdBlue) system. The rear reads ML 320 CDI on the left side and 4Matic on the right side.

Starting in 2009 MY the W164 got the SCR and Urea tank and the naming was changed to Bluetec instead of CDI.

Our 2014 ML350 Bluetec (W166) has the later version OM642 with the SCR. The rear reads ML 350 on the left and Bluetec on the right side. No mention of 4Matic on the rear, but it definitely has 4 wheel drive.

I wonder if the difference between the CDI and Bluetec nomenclature has to do with the addition of the SCR? Maybe the early production 2007s had OM642s without the SCR. If you have access to EPC plug the VIN in and see if the SCR components are grayed out.

Does your friend's 2007 have a spare tire? That got sacrificed in the W211 and W164s with the addition of the urea tank. Fortunately they fixed this in the W166 and it has the donut spare like our 2008 ML. The urea tank is somewhere under the rear of the vehicle and it is filled through a second fitting behind the fuel door.

Yes the car does have a spare tire. I thought I read somewhere that the AdBlue in the sedans started in MY 2009. Both cars being '07, neither have SCR. I am only speculating that the Bluetec vs CDI badging in the sedans has to do with production date. I could be wrong, but yes, a VIN search of both cars would probably unravel the mystery.....Rich

However, it was probably the most involved (many different parts to remove/replace) job I have done. I will say one thing, a very few tools are needed to do the job. Just three Torx bits, a 13mm socket or wrench, an E10 & E12 socket, a 7&8mm nut driver, and a screwdriver. Most everything uses the E sockets which is really great. I commend Daimlerchrysler for their quality design in this area. I have heard that in those years, the MB product got worse, and the Chrysler product got better. Either way, I am very happy overall with the W211 now that I own one, and have done what I would consider a "major" repair.......Rich
FYI:
Local dealer said this repair to replace oil cooler seals was $3000 minimum.

Has your rear main seal given you any grief yet? I've just recently noticed oil spots again after having done the oil cooler...

Also, Napa is running a sale on Valvoline 5w-40 MST - which is MB 229.51 spec. It's ~$5.50 a quart right now!

Great info and pics!!

Just picked up an 08 GL 320 CDI, 98k and supposed dealer service. I am changing oil, air and fuel filters respectively. Just a few quick ??s
Can I use my MBII icarsoft for the adaptation relearn for the MAPs?
And, would use of additives like 2 st oil and Power service be a consideration with the pre ad blue CDI 642s? Would this lessen chances of carbon build up and lube the already dry ULSD we use now?
just a thought, Thanks!!

Is there enough access to replace the swirl motor if the turbo and fuel filter is removed?
