You should not be losing the rear main at 138k. At least not on a modern engine.

I am not sure how oil is getting inside the bell housing. I will check behind the turbo for leaks.

Mine was leaking like yours because the weep hole was clogged and oil was overflowing on top and coming down inside the bell housing. Try blowing out the weep hole with compressed air from below.

spoke to a few friends at MB/who work on MBs regarding the OM642, and they noted:
As part of the oil cooler service/seal - they replace the oil cooler due to the possibility that it might be warped. It sounds like a fair amount of us reused them with no ill-effects - but still something to think about. They also replace the turbo inlet seal and the crank-case breather seal as part of the service, and due to having this issue myself (and a few others on here) after doing the oil cooler - think it's good peace of mind and good practice if you're in there. They did note an abnormally high number of early (07-09ish) OM642s coming in for additional oil leaks after having an oil cooler leak. A friend who does work independent work reports that 20-25% of the cars that have an oil cooler leak also have a rear main that weeps. My rear main is weeping now - not enough to drip on the ground, but enough to have a nice film of oil underneath. I've got 177k miles on my 07, noticed the weep happening when I did my transmission service at ~140k miles.

In Germany they replace oil cooler when they do this job. I was asked by the mechanic here did I replace the oil cooler when I did the job.

Which weep hole are you referring to?

I have oil inside my bell housing and not on top.

I spoke with a mechanic at 5th gear and they said it’s your rear main seal if you have oil inside your bell housing. He said address your oil leaks from top of your motor and then move down. https://fifthgear.biz/fifthgear-blog/mercedes-benz-blutec-leaking-oil-cooler/

how to?
Folks, I need a little help....I am in the middle of doing this job myself.
How do you take off the left EGR motor/positioner? According to WIS, I take off two bolts, remove the hoses and "take it off from the top". I took the bolts off, disconnected the hose which is visible from the front, but it seems to be literally "welded" to the manifold/engine. I even tried knocking it lightly...not budging at all Is there a trick to it? |

Gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet. If you have the bolts out then it has to be pulled straight up from a recess in the manifold. There is a stem that sticks down into the manifold and it gets carbon crusted. Also try hitting the seam with a little AeroKroil or other penetrant.
Strike gently but firmly such that you get it to rotate. Once it starts turning then you can grab the top and start wiggling it back and forth and finally it will break free so you can pull it up.

No Start
Tackled this job over the weekend. It took me 2 full days to get everything apart and back together again. Couldn't of done it without the help of this forum!
After getting everything buttoned back together - I tried to start the vehicle and noticed I had a fuel line leaking around one of the old clamps. Repaired that and then the car wouldn't even crank. Turns out that was just a fuse. Now I've cranked and cranked and the thing still won't fire. Any suggestions? How long is "normal" to crank after doing this before it does start? Thanks |

Thanks Jay Bob,
I tried a bit more and then figured out what I really do not need to take that thing off. If I disconnect the large coolant hose from the firewall and the small hose from the EGR motor, I can easily take off the whole left manifold along with the motor still attached to the manifold, no problem! @#$@# service manual keep it simple! Question about this hole/cavity in the back near the pedestal: It is totally filled with black oil. Is there something blocked which needs to be opened up so that the oil drains down?
Also, how do you guys clean all that baked on oil? Brush and diesel fuel? I am working in a garage so cannot use engine degreaser + hose |
