1972 220D Running

So after cleaning and partially rebuilding the injection pump on my 72 220D it is finally running after 24 years. New fuel filters have been installed along with new diesel fuel.

I would like to refurbish/clean the cooling system including removing the radiator and flushing the system. Is they any other items that I should be concerned about regarding the cooling system?

I want to concentrate on the engine first then move to the other systems, brakes, suspension, drivetrain, etc.

Sam

There are replaceable o-rings in the heater control valve. This site sells a kit I believe. One review of the kit says two different o-rings are needed. I believe (guess) the one they sell is square and unusual. The other is available anywhere. But make sure to use brown, or green, not a standard o-ring.

Ummm. 24 years? All the hoses?

Not sure if you need to remove it. I guess if you want it boiled out. There are some little rubber pieces that hold it in. It just "lifts" out, in theory.

How about the gasket on the thermostat housing itself. 24 years, you mine as well order a whole head gasket set. This site sells the genuine MB one for not much more than aftermarket.

Was water sitting in there 24 years? Maybe the water pump?

I tried to limit to cooling system. Lol. I could go all day.

If it's been parked you might want to check that the vacuum pump is upgraded to the new style. Old one can grenade and drop into the timing assembly. Research will tell the difference. I can't remember. Something about bolts.

And I believe there was a timing chain guide update. Two pieces converted to one bigger one. But I wouldn't quote me on that.

And anxiously, the belt that drives the water pump.

24 years? Literally everything rubber. It's not that bad. I'm almost done.

Clean ride.
