interesting car but no way to get a title for it in CA due to the need to satisfy the smog police of its being a valid conversion

Its interesting, looks like a beat 129 with a worn 602. I appreciate the ingenuity, but I probably won't rush out there to buy it.

it is 1990 300 SL 2.5 Turbo Diesel body style r 129.The engine is from 1991 w124 300D
If the diesel engine is same model year or newer than the body, it is perfectly legal in California and smog exempt. It will have to make a 1 time trip to the referee station.

That's correct! It will need all the smog equipment hooked up and operational for the inspection. Mine (617 into a 107) was quite painless.

Dang... that was 10 months ago, it`s long gone.

Looked through 3 pages of the bay Area CL for SL`s.... where is it?

Sounds like a great project. Pictures please as you do it.

Most people swap a 603 IP to get around the ECU problem and go with a manual trans for the same reason.

Good luck.

Did the model it went into have diesel as an original option? I thought that was the case.

No. Diesels were only available in sedans...at least before 2012.

So as long as the diesel is newer it's ok? No other tricks such as same manufacture? Do you have a smog inspection ever?

For some reason I thought they said it had to be a model that offered a diesel.

Was this a long time ago maybe?

I'm thinking 603 IP with big elements...big turbo....mated to a 6-speed manual....
