tracking down an oil leak on 87 300td (wagon)
 

I have been chasing an oil leak and replaced the seals for the turbo oil supply and return tube. Upon finishing the re installation I noticed an oil puddle beneath the car. Long story short is the metal oil supply line had been rubbed through and had a pin hole leak. It appears that the bracket 6031420240 was disconnected and laying next to the line and over time rubbed through the line. I had found the loose bracket a few weeks ago and was wondering at the time what it was for :) I have subsequently placed the bracket in an unknown location aka LOST

Anyhow I had a local shop braze the line shut. He stated he has done this numerous times over the years and had success with the repair rather than replacing the line.

I am now in search of a replacement bracket. 6031420240 It is dealer NLA . In the course of the oil leak search I also replaced the corrugated flex tube and joint at the exhaust manifold by the turbo. I suspect that the non attached bracket led to an early demise of that flex tube.

That's funny, MB of South Atlanta website says it it available for $20.

I have found that my local stealership has very little interest in keeping any parts for older cars like mine in stock, and generally I have to do all the research and bring them the part numbers and print out from the EPC, and then I have to pay in advance, wait a few days or longer for the "special order", and then make another trip across town to pick up the part. I gave up on that after the second go-round, now I just call them and if it is not in stock, I buy elsewhere.

Tom Hanson gives a very nice discount for MBCA membership, and the part is shipped to my door.

I was on their website before I posted my original message and was ready to buy the part and something in my head said to call and verify its in stock. Well I called them and their website is "primarily a catalog and just because it shows in there does not mean its available" or whatever the guy on the phone stated. Its NLA according to MB of South Atlanta. He recommended the Classic Center in Irvine Calif as well

Ah, ok. I guess you will need to find a used part, either locally or on the "used parts for sale" section of this site.

LKQ may have a yard near you as well, I don't think their on-line info is very informative, they usually have a good turn over so if you don't find one this week, keep going back.

I found the bracket :). I found it a few weeks ago and didn't know what it was for. Luckily I don't throw anything away :). It took cleaning out two cars, the garage and finally finding it amongst some other non descript parts on the garage floor.
