300D Automatic Versus 230
My Brother found a 230T that has been involved in a major accident evolving both ends and now I am looking to purchase it as a organ donor for the '79. However, the five speed transmission is awfully tempting, especially since the '85 TD-T transmission is having issues! :D
So the questions are, is there significant difference in gearing between diesel and petrol transmissions? Can the flywheel from the four cylinder be used on the five cylinder? I have my doubts, but had to ask. :P Thank y'all for the help in advance! :D |
Is it an M102 or an M115? If its an M102 the trans won't bolt to your OM617 nor will the flywheel.

Well, all I know is its a 1985 W123 230T. |
It won't bolt to your 617 starter is on the other side
|
Apparently the M115 has a similar valve cover to the OM617, right?
If so, means this is a M102. Das ist gut! Eliminates the temptation, all the waste, and temptation! Plan returns to what it was: remove the driveline from the '79TD and replace with the driveline of the '85TE. However, there will be some Euroness going on the '85TD-T! :P |
The 5 speed transmission you have in the 230T will fit W124 and W201 with 4, 5 and 6 cilynders

Was writing my answer when you posted, so please see that plan. Now all based on getting the 230TE, which has many factors. |
Yes the M115 has a similar valve cover you have a OM 102 same engine found in the 190E

Well, I am not thinking of owning a W124 any time soon! :P If I get this TE, that will mean four vehicles on the property! I think I have a problem... :P  |

So, that should mean parts and information aren't too hard to find, right? |
Well, I might not be correct, but I think I am. Adriel states that the 230T is a gasser in a W123 wagon. Now I have always thought that "All" W123's had the starter on the passenger or right side, all 124's have the starter on the driver or left side. So check where the starter is. If it is on the same side I would say it would swap over. The flywheel then should probably fit also, but would be very light in weight and could be useable but objectionable.
