W201 steering issues

A couple months ago my dad bought an 85 190D and it's having some steering problems. The biggest thing is it doesn't return to center very well if you turn more than half a revolution of the steering wheel, and if you turn it all the way to the stops it doesn't want to return at all and it takes some serious arm work to get it back

Anybody who's better versed in steering boxes know what the issue might be who can shed some light on the issue?

The 1991 Mercedes 190E 2.6L I owned would sometime not want to return back to center making a large turn on the wheel. However it was went it was very cold outside. In warm temperatures it didn't seem to ever occur. You might check the power steering reservoir for fluid, and maybe change the fluid and filter. Also, you might want to check the belt on the pump, that it is tight. The steering damper can give those kind of effects if it is bad. You might want to check it to see, if it shows fluid leakage. If someone over tightened the steering box, that can cause it to not return correctly.

Have you had the alignment checked?

Steve.

Not had the alignment checked yet, I'll have to get on that, and check the other things as well

If it had insufficient caster, the return to center would be bad. Normally, I think the W201's run about 10 degrees of caster.

x2 on ball joints. I had EXACTLY that problem on my 91 300D and it turned out to be ball joints even though they weren't squeaking at all.

I will add that external inspection of ball joints revealed nothing wrong. It was only AFTER everything was taken apart that the problem was confirmed.
