-10AN Turbo Oil Drain Adapter for OM617a Block....Any interest?

I'm working with a machinist/fabricator to make an adapter that'll press into the stock Oil Drain hole, in the block of your OM617a, and adapt to a -10AN fitting.

This would be a real problem solver for those installing different turbos, modifying manifolds, and in need of a custom oil drain line. It'd also be a nice upgrade from the stock rubber o-ring fittings.

It'd be something kind of like this....this one is for a Volvo Redblock..

Am I the only one who would want something like this, or is there any other interest?

617 oil drain hole is threaded.

No way dude! I know I'm new to Benz's, but I did just remove my Turbo oil drain tube this evening....

It certainly is a press fit metal tube with a complicated o-ring.

Pretty interesting concept. I'd repost in the regular diesel section, as this is not necessarily a performance item. For anyone that has attempted to replace the rubber grommet this could be a fine upgrade.

Would that include both ends?

This would only be an adapter for the engine block side, to a 10AN. You're free to buy your proper Turbo oil drain adapter & AN hose, for your setup.

I'll repost over there....I'm new to Benz and new here, but I'm in the process of installing a different turbocharger to my, new to me, '82 300D Turbo. This leaky oil drain tube is awful, and it's rather cumbersome to service.

I'm trying to come up with a long term solution, for everyone, to get away from that o-ring, and provide a little flexibility, for custom turbocharger setups.

Looking at the image it looks like it would be a slip fit that's glued in. Is that the basic idea?

I'm already using -10AN fittings on my cooler lines, so this could be interesting as well.

Sort of....that was Josh @ Yoshifab's idea for a Volvo Redblock 10AN fitting. On the Volvo block, you could use something as simple as a press-fit adapter and some assembly compound.

The shape of the bore in the OM617a block is more complex. The idea here would probably include some type of mechanical anchor. We are debating that now, thinking of securing it, much like the AC hard line is secured around the alternator....with a longer stud used for the oil pan, and securing the adapter with a nut from above.

10AN is pretty common size used with Turbo Oil Returns. Very easy to fit to most any turbo.

I just went and took a look at my spare upper oil pan and there is a large section that looks to be pretty straight that could be easily be machined for a press fit and secured with some JB Weld or similar. I'm liking the idea...especially not having to mess with grommets. Bad enough installing out of the car - I can't imagine trying to do it in the car.

^ you have a spare upper pan, and you're in San Diego?!?!

Any chance we could borrow it for mock-up? Josh's shop is in San Diego as well.

He is ready to get started on this, for us, but I need someone's upper pan for mock-up

Can anyone help?

You might also offer the same thing but with a Nipple on the end so that someone can simply slide the Hose over the Nipple and use a Hose Clamp.

Turbos mostly drain by Gravity so there is not much pressure involved.

On a 617.952 the large Hose Nut needed for AN Fitting use might hit the Air Filter Drain Tube unless some mod is done there also.

Kind of tough to get a good picture, but here is basically what you're dealing with. The bottom half or so of the hole is parallel and the top has a bit of a lip for the grommet to seat in.

It might be possible to use an O-ring or better would probably be some polyurethane to provide a seal and act as glue to hold the fitting firmly in place.

I'm imagining something as simple as this to provide the connection. The adapter drilled and tapped for 1/2NPT.

Paul:

Thanks for the photos and suggestions...

Josh wants to see the oil pan, in hand, to asses what to do....he'll be able to provide some sort of sketch or rendering, before production, so we can all see what we're getting.

He's waiting to hear from you, regarding your spare pan.

Let me know how your discussion goes with him, and if I can be of any help.

It's a thought. It'd be a whole different product to engineer. It'll be produced with the 10AN fitting. Should someone be inclined to use a simple hose & clamp, they can use a 10AN to Hose Barb fitting.

Just bumping this with an update.

Josh at Yoshifab has worked up a drawing, and a prototype is in the works.

Pricing is very fair and will include a brush for prep, assembly compound, the custom fitting and a 10AN cap.

I'll keep y'all updated as we get closer to production. Once I have something to show, I'll post an official Group-Buy thread.

I'm excited, how about you?

Or plan b, just cut the stock drain pipe and use a rubber hose and clamp?
