W210 Duovalve Cleaning vs. Replacing

99 E300 has 163,000 miles. Six years ago, duovalve was acting up for PO so he took it apart and cleaned it...worked fine for next five years. I took ownership last July. Duovalve began acting up so I used a whacking regimen to get me through the summer.

How long can one of these things be kept going merely by cleaning? I know that EVENTUALLY they need to be replaced...which is my inclination in this case. Just curious if anyone has had success with multiple cleanings over the miles and years.

Can get a new one for about $235. If it's inevitable at some point anyway, I guess I'd just as soon replace it now.

Have you seen the writeup I did where I took the thing completely apart, replaced the swollen rubber bits and put it all back together?

Thanks, about the only thing I would change in the procedure is to use a leather/gasket punch to enlarge the holes in the rubber seals rather than trying to drill them out.

Drilling is a tedious process in the soft rubber and the rough holes I'm sure, allow leakage across the seal which will degrade the performance of the AC in the summer.

They say a whacking regimen can be bad for your eye sight.

I too have read KarTeks writeup and was going to use that on my W210 when the duovalve acts up.
