How is rear bumper supposed to be attached?

I went to move my car this morning, and I found out that some numbskull had hit my car and the rear bumper was hanging off halfway. As in it had detached from the strut that normally supports it. There seems to be a rubber pad at the end of the strut, but it's not clear how the bumper was supposed to attach to it.

Was it originally glued?

If I find out who did this (I won't), I'd like to rearrange their face in a similar manner with a large breaker bar.

Its held in by an aluminum channel that corrodes away. Yours has probably been corroding for 30 years and whatever thoughtless person that hit you car just finished it off. Not all of the pics are broken in this thread, but there are a few methods of getting it back on, otherwise you will need a new bumper.

By now, possibly the other strut-mount is ready to split from your bumper. The tidiest jury-rig solution I've seen for this is a pair of suitably sized U-bolts round the struts, with the threaded ends inserted down through holes drilled through the bottom of the aluminum bumper. Add plates/spacers/washers as needed to maintain correct bumper height.
Or you could drill holes in each steel shock-plate for a pair of carriage-bolts, located so their heads would hidden under the black bumper-strip. But this opens another can-o-worms as the strip connections to these bumpers are not very sturdy.
Or find a replacement from an early W123, which had the 2 struts attached using 8mm carriage-bolts into channels cast inside the aluminum bumper.
Unfortunately, the photos appear to have been deleted from that old bumper thread.

Happy Motoring, Mark

^ Thanks, but I was asking the OP.

Half of the bumper on the CD was drooping one day, failed mount.

The OP has a 240D, I guess I do not know which year but recall him having a 240D and it is definitely a 4speed, because a kathoey he is not.
