1974 240D electric auxiliary radiator fan

Fan for the ac radiator not working. I disassembled fan motor. I found what appears to be a resistor of some kind parallel bridging the connection to one of the brushes. Ohm meter showed broken connection. I removed this "resistor" and now the motor runs fine. WHat was the purpose of this device?
Did it control the speed of the fan motor? Fan speed now seems normal.

Any answers or will I find out the answer myself one day when electric motor fries.

Thanks for any ideas.

MAP

I meant to say that the 240D is a 1976 and not a 1974.
